Passport Service issues over 1 million passports in 2024

The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin has announced that over 1 million passport books and cards were issued in 2024, marking a milestone year for the Passport Service. Forecasts for 2025 indicate continued strong demand, with around 940,000 passports expected to issue next year.
Reflecting on the Passport Service’s impressive performance in 2024 – its centenary year –the Tánaiste said:
"In its 100th year, the Passport Service managed an extraordinary volume of applications, delivering over 1 million passport books and cards for only the second time in the history of the State. January proved to be the busiest month of the year, with over 123,000 applications submitted, and 28 January was the busiest day, with 8,363 applications received in just 24 hours.
"Despite this remarkable demand, the Passport Service maintained its service delivery targets consistently meeting or exceeding turnaround times for virtually all application types. This speaks to the efficiency, dedication, and professionalism of the team.”
The Tánaiste also highlighted the outstanding performance of the Customer Service Hub, which handled over 561,000 queries from citizens this year:
"The Customer Service Hub has been exceptional, answering every call with care and efficiency. This dedication has once again earned the Passport Service the Government and Public Sector Customer Experience (CX) Award at the CX Impact Awards – a recognition that reflects the hard work and commitment of the entire team.”
Acknowledging the efforts of the Passport Service staff, the Tánaiste added:
"This level of achievement would not be possible without the dedication, professionalism, and diligence of the Passport Service staff. They have ensured a secure and efficient service for Irish citizens across the globe, and I want to extend my gratitude for their continued hard work.”
Looking ahead to 2025, the Tánaiste encouraged citizens to plan ahead for their travels:
"Next year is set to be another busy year for the Passport Service. I urge anyone planning to travel to check their passport’s expiry date now. If you need to renew or apply for the first time, I strongly recommend using Passport Online – the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective way to secure your passport."
